Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 01-27-2021 04:52 AM

So, I had an interesting idea... I thought that maybe we as a community could build a single setup, with each member picking the individual position of 1 piece within the setup. Obviously, we will need 40 members to participate in order to complete the setup.

Perhaps when it’s done we could have someone volunteer to play a match with it and post a video with commentary on YouTube lol. I will start off with the first piece, which will be the location of the flag. The next person to comment on this thread will get to choose the next piece, and so on. I’ll try to use Morx’s Board Editor and keep posting pictures of the setup as it progresses.

Here is what it looks like now: https://ibb.co/nb2D6M9

RE: Community Setup - GaryLShelton - 01-27-2021 05:14 AM

I'll place a bomb at J1. Smile

It may be awhile to get 40 people...
?

Nice choice Gary!

Here is what the setup looks like now: https://ibb.co/sPpSqh2

RE: Community Setup - Nortrom - 01-27-2021 01:35 PM

General @ C3

Might be better to not require 40 unique participants, but make it that one can't post two pieces in a row.

RE: Community Setup - Fairway - 01-27-2021 03:25 PM

Lieutenant to E3

RE: Community Setup - Murazor - 01-27-2021 03:50 PM

We are off to a good start so far, but if the interest dies down, then this will probably be something I’ll do. Maybe if we reach a week without a new piece, I will allow everyone to pick additional pieces.

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 01-27-2021 04:16 PM

Alright, so after several more good choices, here is what our setup looks like: https://ibb.co/4gVCCcC

RE: Community Setup - KnightofPepsi - 01-27-2021 04:16 PM

I’d be willing to play a few games with the setup and share on YouTube as long as the setup isn’t a guaranteed loss.

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 01-27-2021 04:22 PM

The setup isn’t looking too crazy so far lol. I chose the flag first so that we wouldn’t get stuck with a front row flag in the middle lane or something lol. You will have first dibs on recording the game. It’s obviously not an obligation though, so don’t feel like it’s something you have to do, if you change your mind. Thanks for volunteering!

RE: Community Setup - Sevenseas - 01-27-2021 05:21 PM

Spy to E4

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 01-27-2021 05:34 PM

Haha, front row Spy is certainly very... interesting.

Here is the current setup: https://ibb.co/r3pGJhS

RE: Community Setup - Richelieu - 01-28-2021 01:09 AM

Bomb at I2

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 01-28-2021 01:26 AM

Solid choice! Now our flag isn’t as vulnerable, which is always good. One thing I feared when I picked my flag spot was that there wouldn’t be much protection from Scouts.

Here is the current setup: https://ibb.co/QDfnMCP

RE: Community Setup - Nortrom - 01-28-2021 03:07 PM

Sergeant J3

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 01-28-2021 03:20 PM

I guess we can all start picking additional pieces if that’s what you guys want. I wanted to get as many community members involved as possible, but I suppose we can always just make additional setups if we finish one quickly. I’m still not going to allow people to pick 2 pieces in a row, though.

After Nortrom’s second choice, I suppose I will go ahead and close the flag.

Here is what our setup looks like now: https://ibb.co/bJJXn5H

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 01-29-2021 03:47 AM

I’ll put a Colo next to the Spy, which leaves our setup looking like this: https://ibb.co/4dSMVYP

RE: Community Setup - Wogomite - 01-29-2021 05:13 AM

Can I make a suggestion that two people who have placed units can agree to switch their two pieces with one another’s? Things will get messy and you may find you are stuck putting pieces in bad positions towards the end. That being said, it may be a good idea to have a list of everyone and where they have their piece placed to make this work properly, if you choose to allow this.

Good suggestion! I’m not sure how things will work for these setups yet. I’d like to complete the first one before I start adding a bunch of rules, though. Definitely something I will consider in the future. Since these are community setups, I might just make a poll and let people vote on whichever rules they would like to see added and whatnot.

On a unrelated note, I came across your YouTube channel somewhat recently and I was a bit disappointed that it doesn’t seem to be active anymore... Do you plan on marking any more videos? The old forum went down before I had a chance to ask, so I figured I may as well ask now.

This setup is abysmal Big Grin

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 01-30-2021 03:44 AM

I think the setup is still potentially playable (despite Sevenseas’s best efforts lol). Colonel up and over is mandatory, but the side with the flag looks a lot like the weak side and maybe that will keep it safe. A blitz down that side could be a disaster though... The Spy could potentially be quite tricky if it doesn’t get sniped in the first few moves. Obviously still a lot of pieces left, but it might not be that bad...

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 01-30-2021 03:54 AM

I’ll put a Miner on f1. Here is the current setup: https://ibb.co/SRMw3Ks

I’ll put another Miner on g1. Current setup:

[Image: 382-C06-E1-EC06-4-D27-B7-CF-5-C2-AE1-C17553.png]

For the next setup, I will work on making the pictures viewable without clicking on a link every time. This should make it a lot easier to keep track of pieces and available spaces, but I haven’t figured out how to do it yet.

Also, I think I will work on making a list of the needed pieces to complete the setup, since the Board Editor has no such feature. I think this will also be quite helpful once we get to around 30 pieces and higher, because making sure we have the appropriate numbers of each piece can be kinda tricky at times. This is going to be a lot more work though, so setup updates may not come as fast.

Edit: Cool, I figured out how to get pictures to work without a link! Sorry that it’s going to take up extra space, but I resized it the best I could.

Thanks! I figured out how to get the pictures to work! It will take up a bit of extra space now, but I’ve resized the pictures as best I can to keep them as small as possible, while still staying readable.

RE: Community Setup - Morx - 01-30-2021 10:12 PM

Time for a miner on C1 then

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 01-30-2021 10:14 PM

We still need:

3 Scouts
1 Miner
2 Sergeants
3 Lieutenants
1 Captain

Edit: Updated picture because Morx made a choice right as I was posting an update. This picture is now correct.

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 02-01-2021 06:44 AM

I’ll put the last Scout on H3. The last 2 spots are both Lieutenants, so our setup is complete! I’ll post the final setup shortly, and then we are only waiting on KnightofPepsi to record a match with it (assuming he still wants to). If not, then we will have to wait for another volunteer.

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 02-01-2021 07:03 AM

Alright guys, here is the final setup:

[Image: 50-DE409-B-1466-4-F8-C-8-DB8-0075-E470-C5-D8.png]

Special thanks to Morx for creating the Board Editor, because I probably would not have been able to organize this without it (at least not as easily, anyway). Also, thanks to everyone who participated!

Sorry to those of you who tried to put pieces in locations that already had pieces, and thus, didn’t get to actually choose a piece in this setup. Towards the end of this setup, I learned how to make pictures viewable without a link, so hopefully we won’t have that problem next time. I’m not sure when the next Community Setup thread will be made, but stay tuned for that!

The next thread I make will probably be a poll thread for various rule suggestions and whatnot. I thought this setup turned out somewhat decently, but I’m curious to know what rule suggestions you guys would like to see. If you have a suggestion, then I’d like for you to comment it in this thread. Then, I will gather all of the suggestions and put them all in the poll thread (probably like a week from now). If any rule suggestion has at least 10 votes and a 66% or greater approval after a week of the poll thread being up, then I will add that rule for the next Community Setup.

RE: Community Setup - KnightofPepsi - 02-01-2021 02:42 PM

If I post Stratego videos on this forum, do they have to be played at stratego.com?

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 02-01-2021 06:47 PM

I’m not sure if playing on an alternative site would count as a “website referral” (which would be against the rules). I did see games recorded on the old forum that were from an alternative site, but the rules for this forum could be different.

We are not looking for this kind of content, no. Luckily, Stratego.com is still operational Wink

RE: Community Setup - Nortrom - 02-02-2021 12:07 AM

It was a fun venture. I think as is, is fine. Perhaps add that at the end, with community census, up to two changes can be made.

RE: Community Setup - KnightofPepsi - 02-02-2021 04:53 AM

This should be interesting to try for sure. I haven't played in awhile due to busy schedule, but hopefully can sneak in a game or two this week. Smile

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 02-02-2021 05:16 AM

Glad to hear that! I haven’t played much recently either. I’ve only played 2 games in total over the last 2 weeks. Burnout has mostly been my problem though. I’ve gotten tired of playing the same handful of setups and slight variations for the roughly 500 matches since I started playing in mid-November.

That was part of the reason I made this thread. I wanted to experiment with some “less optimal” setups and maybe get some inspiration for a new setup idea or something. “Competitive” setups are pretty much all the same in terms of general principles, so this has been kinda nice to freshen things up a bit (even if some of the choices were quite questionable lol).

RE: Community Setup - KnightofPepsi - 02-04-2021 08:15 PM

I've only played maybe three or four games of Stratego the whole month of January, and none in February so far, primarily due to work schedule. We'll see if the lack of playing helps or makes things worse!

As life would have it, this weekend looks busy already, so no promises. But I'd like to record a couple of games with this setup with commentary included. I plan to discuss my thoughts about the setup before playing too. Some thoughts will probably be obvious (E4 spy?) but I have a few others to share too. Smile

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 02-06-2021 05:14 AM

Yes, that appears to be accurate. It should indeed create some interesting games lol. Fortunately, the vast majority of the players still on Stratego.com seem to be low Bronze players, so it shouldn’t be too bad.

RE: Community Setup - GaryLShelton - 02-06-2021 09:51 AM

Just now noticed the spy on E4. Wow, that is risky. As I recall, there was a crazy award on the desktop version about capturing the Marshal with the spy before anything else was captured. You needed a spy on the front row to get this award. I always regarded this "award" as an unobtainable one. Might it happen now? ?

I believe you are referring to "The Gambler" which is when the spy captures the marshal before any piece on the board has been revealed. I think I got mine vs. 12 against one of his marshal charges.

Thanks for recording the match! I’ll go ahead and leave my thoughts in a spoiler tag. I probably should’ve used a spoiler tag sooner, but it’s still pretty soon after my original post, so it should be alright.

Here are my thoughts:

RE: Community Setup - 01AAAAF - 02-11-2021 06:12 AM

Also, if anyone wants to know how to use a spoiler tag, it’s like this:

[Image: 7-F58209-A-E6-FB-49-AB-95-FB-7-EF14-A4-BF181.png]

It’s a little trick that I remembered from other forums that I’ve been on. I noticed this forum doesn’t actually have a button to add spoiler tags.

@01AAAAF can you make a new thread for a new setup?

RE: Community Setup - KnightofPepsi - 02-16-2021 05:54 AM

I am interested in trying this setup again another time or two, just for fun. My work schedule is calming down at last, so keep an eye out for another video hopefully sometime this week!

I had a chance to try this first setup again. It turned out to be an interesting game (in my opinion).

Your spoiler tag will work properly if you remove the period from your second brackets. Probably just a typo, but I agree regardless. Certainly some very interesting games!
